Visx, which supplied the machinery – and collected fees – for about two-thirds of them, gets about half of its revenue from royalties each time its machines are used. However, after Visx dropped its royalty to $100 from $250 in the face of growing competition from Nidek, which does not charge such fees, Visx’s revenue plummeted 34 percent, to $184.6 million, in the year ended March 31.
